Uptime Institute 2012 Data Center Industry Survey

Uptime Institute recently completed its second annual datacenter industry survey, which collected data around Digital Infrastructure deployment trends, procurement plans, measurement and standards practices, and other topics that impact the mission-critical datacenter industry.

Key findings of the survey included:

  • 55% of organizations reported a datacenter budget increase over 2011.
  • Nearly 50% of organizations have deployed private cloud; 25% have deployed public cloud.
  • Cost reduction is the primary driver for organizations to pursue cloud computing.
  • Average PUE of respondents' largest datacenter is between 1.8 and 1.89.
  • Modular datacenter deployment doubled over 2011, but is still in single digits (9%).

November 7th, 2011 - Fujitsu Develops Cooling Technology That Utilizes a CPU's Waste Heat. Producing water of a temperature low enough for use in cooling factory equipment requires a substantial amount of energy. Currently, water is normally chilled using electricity, boilers or other sources of thermal energy, but now there are new attempts to employ heat, including that from high temperature waste water, as an energy source. Fujitsu Laboratories has developed a technology that can chill water from relatively low-temperature sources that have not been usable in the past. At 55°C, water produced from water-cooled type CPUs is of a relatively low temperature, which fluctuates depending on load. However, it is possible to continuously produce chilled water even from this waste water. Read more.

Climate control. No charge. Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada

See how the province of Newfoundland and Labrador in Canada is trying to lure data center clients to its location. When temperatures heat up in North America, we tend to keep our cool. The Canadian province of Newfoundland and Labrador is the natural choice for Data Centers, boasting a moderate marine climate with summers averaging 68º F, and relatively mild winters around 32º F. Megawatts vs. millions: The role of incentives in data center location decisions

Traditionally, most economic development groups and elected leaders at the state & local level focus on jobs. The primary role of any economic development group is to increase the standard of living of a community's residents. Thus, the focus is on job creation and economic incentives programs designed to be triggered when jobs are involved.
